What is Anxiety?

As a Life Coach and Clinical Hypnotherapist, I have worked with many clients who have struggled with anxiety. I understand the impact that it can have on a person's daily life, and I am committed to helping my clients overcome it.

So, what is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a feeling of unease that can be related to future events or past experiences. Everyone has feelings of anxiety at different times of their lives and this is completely normal. Sometimes our anxiety is a helpful warning sign that something isn’t right. It is a natural human response when we feel under threat (see fight or flight response below).

Anxiety is experienced through our thoughts, feelings and physical sensations. It can vary on a scale from being mild to severe. It can come and go. We can have periods of our lives when we feel more anxious, due to a number of different factors. Some people’s anxiety can be debilitating and prevent them living their life to the full. How we manage our anxiety is key.

With anxiety, the fight or flight response is activated even in the absence of an actual physical threat. People with anxiety may perceive certain situations or events as threatening, even though they may not be dangerous. This can lead to the activation of the fight or flight response, resulting in physical symptoms such as increased heart rate, sweating, shaking, and difficulty breathing. These symptoms can be distressing and can make the person feel even more anxious, leading to a cycle of anxiety and physical symptoms. Additionally, in some forms of anxiety disorder, such as panic disorder, the fight or flight response can be triggered unexpectedly and without any apparent cause, leading to a panic attack.

One of the keys to coping with anxiety is to try and live in the present moment. When we are anxious, we tend to focus on the future, worrying about things that might happen, or dwelling on things that have already happened in the past. By focusing on the here and now, you can learn to manage and control your anxiety, instead of letting it control you.

I use a variety of coaching techniques in my sessions, including clinical hypnotherapy, EFT, NLP, CBT, Breathwork, and Mindfulness, to help my clients achieve their goals. Each client is unique, and therefore the approach will be tailored to their specific needs. With hypnotherapy, for example, I will guide you into a relaxed state of mind, where you will be more open to suggestions for positive change. This can be especially effective for people who have a strong emotional response to their anxiety. Below I have provided a very brief insight into EFT and CBT and how either of these techniques can help you take back some control.

EFT, also known as Emotional Freedom Technique and how it can help you if you suffer with anxiety.

EFT, is a form of psychological acupressure that can be used to release negative emotions and limiting beliefs. It is a simple tapping technique that can help to reduce stress and anxiety. NLP, or neuro-linguistic programming, is a form of therapy that focuses on the connection between language, behaviour, and emotions. It can be used to help people change negative thought patterns and behaviours that are contributing to their anxiety.

CBT, or cognitive-behavioural therapy

CBT, or cognitive-behavioural therapy, is a form of therapy that focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It can be used to help people change negative thought patterns and behaviours that are contributing to their anxiety. Breathwork, is a form of therapy that uses breathing techniques to help people relax and reduce stress and anxiety. Mindfulness is a form of therapy that encourages people to be present in the moment, to focus on their thoughts and feelings without judgement, and to learn to accept them.
